Millie Bobby Brown’s Manicure At The SAG Awards Was An Early 2000s Throwback

Millie Bobby Brown served up a major beauty moment at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, with a simple touch that was so unexpected and chic it was hard to miss: her simple French manicure. Yes, Brown was rocking the early 2000s fave with long oval-shaped nails. The Stranger Things actor has become a burgeoning style star at the young age of 15, and this retro move is just another example of her mastery.

Of course, this isn’t the first time in recent memory we’ve seen French manicures paired with high fashion. They appeared on the runway this past September at New York Fashion week and models like Bella Hadid have been remixing the look with bold colors. Kate Hudson showed off the look with baby blue at a Michael Kors presentation at NYFW, as did Beyoncè, who went throwback like Brown, with white tips in a series of Instagram photos.

Brown is one of many Gen Z stars taking risks with beauty that include throwing it back. Speaking about the launch of her line, Florence By Mills, in August, she told Refinery29 her mantra is about feeling her best. “It’s not about other people; it’s about making yourself feel good.”

Interestingly, the backstory of the white-on-natural mani is a Hollywood one and has nothing to do with French trends. Apparently, it’s all keeping continuity and saving time while making movies and shows, so, in the 1970s, the creator of Orly nail polish created the white-tip-and-natural-base look as a response to the movie productions that were slowed down by actors needing to change their nail color for costume changes.

As for the rest of her beauty look at the SAGs, Brown’s hair was cut several inches, worn sleek over her shoulders, and parted down the middle. Her makeup was soft with a smoky eye and a nude lip, with products from her own beauty line and celebrity makeup legend Pat McGrath, according to Brown’s makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan. She prepped Brown’s skin with Doctor Babor Hydro RX Hyaluron Cream and the Doctor Babor Power Serum Ampoules – Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Rihanna may not have given us an album yet, but she has been keeping herself busy with a special creative project with i-D. The global superstar has collaborated with the magazine on a one-off zine to celebrate its 40-year anniversary.

Rihannazine highlights a cast of brilliant changemakers who are set to re-shape culture and their communities in 2020. For the issue, Rihanna and i-D handpicked 43 inspirational people across fashion, art, cinema, music and activism from musicians Kelela and Tommy Genesis, and models Adut Akech, Adwoa Aboah and Gigi Hadid to writers Roxane Gay and Zadie Smith, as well as activist and founder of the #MeToo movement, Tarana Burke.

The 144-page zine also features interviews with rising actress and star of HBO’s Euphoria, Alexa Demie, writer and producer Lena Waithe, and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Vanessa Vanjie Mateo.

The one-off limited edition issue was shot entirely by world-renowned photographer Mario Sorrenti and will be available to buy globally January 27 with a limited run of 5,000 copies.

Alongside the zine, i-D‘s will roll out a series of videos featuring Hadid, DJ and producer Kitty Cash, and model Paloma Elsesser answering questions from RiRi herself. The Q’s include personal aspirations for 2020 and the one thing they’ve always wanted to ask her.

Speaking on the creative project, Rihanna said: “For me, this very special issue of i-D represents change and culture. It is dedicated to some of the people who are progressively reshaping communities across fashion, music, art, and activism — creating a more inclusive and diverse future.”

“Reaching this milestone deserved something monumental. Something we’ve never done before in our 40-year history,” said Alistair McKimm, Editor-in-Chief of i-D.

“Working with Rihanna, we handpicked the people featured in this project for many different reasons; they may all represent different things but what unites them is everyone featured in these pages is incredibly inspirational,” McKimm continued. “They are artists, writers, activists, musicians and women on the front lines of the fashion industry.”

Coco Gauff Just Defeated Venus Williams In The Australian Open. Is Serena Next?

Cori “Coco” Gauff is coming for that “greatest athlete of all time” title.

The 15-year-old tennis star defeated her “idol” Venus Williams in Monday’s opening round of the Australian Open 7-6 (5), 6-3. This marks their second match up, the first being at last year’s Wimbledon, where Gauff also won.

“I definitely was more confident this time,” Gauff told ESPN following her victory. A mere six months ago, Guaff was a relatively unknown Grand Slam rookie. Now she’s on a mission “to be the greatest.”

“My mission is to be the greatest,” Gauff told The New York Times. “That’s my goal, to win as many Grand Slams as possible. But for today, my mission was to win.”

Winning as many Grand Slams as possible means Gauff will have to best record holder Serena Williams, whom she’s yet to play at this event. Williams has won the most Grand Slam titles of all time during her career, with a total of 23 Grand Slam tournament victories and has made it clear that she wants to win another at the Australian Open.

Fortunately, Williams thinks Gauff is more than capable of being a champ, declaring that she’s a “big fan” of hers.

“I think there are some 15-year-olds, like me, who wouldn’t know what to do at Wimbledon,” Williams said back in 2019. “Then you have a 15-year-old like Coco who knows what to do. I think she’s definitely on a different level.”

Oh, to be in the stands when this match finally does happen.

Judy Chicago Designed Dior’s Runway To Look Like A Birth Canal

$

Ever since Maria Grazia Chiuri began her tenure as the creative director of Dior in 2016, she’s routinely used the runway as a platform to speak about women’s issues. From celebrating female artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Niki de Saint Phalle, to sending models down the runway in t-shirts that said, “We should all be feminists” and “Why have there been no great women artists?” the brand’s first female artistic director isn’t afraid to make her clothing pointed, and political.

As was the case in Paris yesterday, when Dior showed its Spring 2020 Couture, which featured a collaboration with landmark feminist artist Judy Chicago (the creator of the famed “Dinner Party” installation). As WWD reported, Chicago designed the set of the show at the Rodin Museum, and it will be on view to the public through January 26. Together, Chicago and Chiuri brought to life what was meant to be a public sculpture from 1977 — a birth canal, according to Vogue, where a group of models-as-goddesses descended down a womb-shaped runway. According to Dior’s Instagram, Chiuri saw the runway show as an opportunity to “recall the unstoppable creative force of women.”

Vogue reports that during a six-month period, the designer’s conversations with the artist brought about the idea of “pagan worship of goddesses and the struggle of women artists to find their own means of expression within the female-excluding patriarchal system of western art.” This sparked Chiuri’s memories of Italian statues in Rome: On Instagram, the brand shared that the collection drew “inspiration from classical representations of goddesses, such as Athena. Her majestic allure is a neo-platonic allegory of beauty, combining intellectual strength and aesthetic harmony.” Influenced by Greco-Roman peplos, drapey details were applied to flowy golden gowns, tailored suitings, and skirts, with models wearing crowns and strappy Roman-style sandals.

“The collection’s key motifs — wholesome, golden ears of wheat — recall the unstoppable creative force of women,” the Instagram post continued. Another one detailed how Chiuri updated Dior’s iconic “Bar” jacket by tricking out tailored looks in “precious metal shades and draping worthy of a goddess.” With a finale dress that incorporated a sequined moon — an ancient symbol of femininity — the runway was lined with embroidered banners created by Chicago and a women’s group in India, with one at the end that asked: “What if Women Ruled the World?” In a time when women are fighting for equal pay and representation across all industries, this is a solid inquiry, but not necessarily a new one.

Though Chiuri’s unwavering dedication to discussing (and posing valid questions about) women’s issues through the runway is noble, her couture is still only ever donned by young, thin, and able-bodied models. In order for Dior to truly transition into a brand that stands for sisterhood, it would be smart to take a note from brands like Chromat and Savage x Fenty, who recognize that feminism in fashion only works when it embraces everybody — with the runway as the ultimate source of inclusivity. As it stands now, the collection — while gorgeous — isn’t doing much to upend couture’s status quo approach to women, and their bodies.

Simon Porte Jacquemus knows how to put on a show. His Spring 2020 presentation, set amongst a field of lavender flowers in the South of France, is proof of that. But his latest production, while not quite as over-the-top as the last, had an air about it that seemed bigger and more important than any of the previous ones.

On Friday, the French designer presented his co-ed Winter 2020/21 collection for a limited group of fashion elite during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. Unlike his other shows, which have been praised for their bold and extravagant sets, this one was stripped clean, with off-white floors and dark walls acting as the sole backdrop for the collection, which he named “Année 97.”

I was 7 the day I cut a skirt for my mum out of a linen curtain. Here is the collection L’année 97,” the designer wrote in an Instagram caption. L’année 97, which translates to The Year ’97, pays homage to Jacquemus’ beginnings, most notably, the simplicity of his first designs. Look number one from the show, which features a linen skirt not far off from the one he designed for his mother, acts as a reminder of how he got his start in design. The classic fabric goes on to play a star role in the remainder of the collection.

As for the clothing itself, Jacquemus returned to his southern roots, creating simple, beautiful clothing for the people. He even made a point to cut the prices, with many pieces, dresses included, selling for around 500 euros, rather than his usual 700 to 1,000+ euro price range. On the women, you’ll find fuzzy bloomers; subtle, yet sexy dresses; over-the-knee boots paired with micro shorts; and bright pops of color. The men’s looks included everything from ombre denim to linen puffer coats to exposed boxers.

And a Jacquemus collection wouldn’t be complete without a handbag moment. This season, the designer introduced a record number of new bag silhouettes, from surprisingly normal-sized tote bags to wicker versions of his ubiquitous Le Chiquito mini bags. Cross bodies, belt bags, and harness-style bags were also scattered throughout.

But if watching Bella and Gigi Hadid (both going completely au naturale) strut down the runway in near-matching linen midi dresses wasn’t enough to get the Internet riled up, the collection also introduced a sustainability aspect. After ten years of working with one fabric manufacturer, Jacquemus finally decided to push them to create a sustainable fabric for him. “They didn’t have a sustainable fabric that we wanted. Now, they do — because of the size of the order I can make,” Vogue reported. “It isn’t just for ecologie, [though,] it’s also people — their rhythm of work also has to have sense. I don’t say I’m a green brand or anything like that; it’s not marketing. But I think we have to think more like my grandparents did: like, we have tomatoes in the garden, so we eat tomatoes.”

Hillary Clinton Has Some Words For Bernie Sanders In Her New Documentary

On the first day of Trump’s senate impeachment, the politics Gods gave to us a re-hashing of the 2016 election (go figure). This throwback arrived in the form of Hulu’s historic docuseries Hillary: a four part series about the life and 2016 presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. Set to premiere at Sundance and stream on Hulu on March 6th, the documentary series features exclusive interviews with Hillary Clinton as well as her daughter Chelsea, staff, friends, journalists, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton. It also has exclusive behind-the-scenes moments from her 2016 campaign. While the series mainly focuses on Clinton herself, she also speaks candidly about her feelings towards her former opponent and current presidential hopeful, Sen. Bernie Sanders — and she did not hold back.

Ahead of the premiere at Sundance, Clinton gave an exclusive interview to The Hollywood Reporter detailing her feelings in Sanders during the 2016 democratic primary race. “He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done,” Clinton says. “He was a career politician. It’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.” When asked if her assessment of the presidential candidate still holds as we enter the 2020 caucuses, she said it does.

Overall, she expressed concern about the “culture” around Sanders, including his supporters’ attacks on women candidates. “You either don’t know what your campaign and supporters are doing, or you’re just giving them a wink and you want them to go after Kamala [Harris] or after Elizabeth [Warren],” Clinton told THR, adding, “I think that that’s a pattern that people should take into account when they make their decisions.”

Since last week’s news cycle hashed out the he-said she-said between Sanders and Warren, which included a heated debate moment where Sanders was confronted about saying that a woman could never be elected as president, both Sanders and his campaign staff have unequivocally denied all of it. While Warren maintains that he did say this, even going so far as to confront him after the debate and potentially break their long-time non-aggression pact, the discourse has taken on a life of its own in the last week, particularly for Sanders. Now, Clinton says we must “all say loudly” that the sentiment that a woman can’t be president is untrue.

“I think that both the press and the public have to really hold everybody running accountable for what they say and what their campaign says and does,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s particularly true with what’s going on right now with the Bernie campaign having gone after Elizabeth with a very personal attack on her.” This, Clinton sees as “part of a pattern” for Sanders, subsequent to previous statements on Clinton being “unqualified” to be president.

As the news of Clinton’s take on Sanders comes in the height of the 2020 Democratic race, the internet, in true form, had their own words for both Hillary and Bernie.

But, during the debate, Sanders actually defended Clinton’s record, reminding everyone that she beat Trump in the 2016 election with the popular vote. Sanders, who recent reports have named as America’s most popular Senator, decidedly chose not to engage in Clinton’s remarks and focus on Trump’s Senate hearing.

“My focus today is on a monumental moment in American history: the impeachment trial of Donald Trump,” Sanders said to press. “Together, we are going to go forward and defeat the most dangerous president in American history.”

Clinton’s interview is, of course, meant to rack up excitement about the docuseries being released in the coming months. If nothing else, it’s certainly causing conversation. Ultimately, the docuseries will examine Hillary Clinton’s fame and how she became so simultaneously admired and scrutinized. “Hillary is a deeply personal, reflective and unflinching look at the woman who is arguably the most recognizable female political figure in history,” said Randy Freer, the CEO of Hulu, in a statement.

The documentary trailer also refers to her as the most vilified woman in America. Considering her accomplishments and that, objectively, she is one of the most qualified people in U.S. politics, the documentary will be an interesting look into how that vilification of a woman who made it so far into the 2016 election came to be.

5 Things To Know About Katie Sowers, The First Female & Openly Gay Super Bowl Coach

$

Katie Sowers knows a little bit about making history. After a recent win, the assistant coach is officially taking her team, the San Francisco 49ers, to Super Bowl LIV. But whether they beat the Kansas City Chiefs in February or not, Sowers’s name will be going down in the books as both the first female and the first openly-LGBTQ coach to work the sidelines at the big game.

When her team beat the Green Bay Packers 37-20 on Sunday evening, Sowers shared a confetti-filled video on Instagram of her team celebrating. “Takin our talents to south beach [sic],” she wrote in the caption.

The 33-year-old coach is here to win — while changing history for the better. Here’s what you need to know about her leading up to the Super Bowl on February 2.

Sowers came out publicly in 2017, becoming the first openly gay coach in the NFL.

Sowers isn’t new to notable “firsts.” She was the very first openly gay NFL coach. Ever. She gave an interview with OutSports about this in 2017, in which she said she wanted to encourage other people in the world of sports to be themselves.

“No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are,” she told Outsports. “There are so many people who identify as LGBT in the NFL, as in any business, that do not feel comfortable being public about their sexual orientation.”

Sowers is also only the second woman in the NFL to be in a full-time coaching position, and the first to go to the Super Bowl with her team. (The very first was Kathryn Smith, who was hired by the Buffalo Bills in 2016.)

Sowers told People Magazine that isn’t what defines her, though. “When you ask any of the coaches who work with me, often they’ll get asked about working with a female,” Sowers told People. “To them, it’s not even something that they think about — and it’s not something that I truly think about. They see me for who I am as a coach, and not a female coach.”

Refinery29 has reached out to a representative for Sowers for an interview.

Sowers says she’s overcome being discriminated against in the workforce.

In her interview with OutSports, Sowers explained that she’d lost out on a job because of her sexual orientation.

“As I was finishing college, I actually got turned down from a volunteer coaching job because I was a lesbian,” she told OutSports. “That moment really impacted me because it was the first time I truly felt judged because of my sexual orientation. I was so passionate about coaching and to feel like my opportunities were limited because of who I loved was hard to deal with. However, without that experience I would not be where I am today.”

Sowers has played professional football.

Like many great coaches, Sowers has played football at an elite level herself. ESPN reports that she was a quarterback for the Kansas City Titans, which is in the Women’s Football Alliance. In 2013, Sowers was a member of the USA Women’s National Football Team and helped her teammates earn gold, CBS News reports.

It’s no surprise she took her talents to the field. When she was growing up, the Hesston, Kansas, native wrote a letter about loving the game when she was only 8 years old. “My mom wants me to play basketball. I don’t want to. I want to play football,” she wrote, according to OutSports. “My favorite part of football is tackling.”

Sowers has a twin sister.

A love for tossing around the pigskin runs in the family, ESPN reports. She coach has a twin sister named Liz, who’s also played football in the WFA.

Sowers is in a relationship.

Sowers has posted on social media about how her girlfriend and her family are major parts of her support system.

In September 2019, Sowers shared on Twitter that her girlfriend came out to her family about dating a woman for the first time. Sowers accompanied the post with a picture of a heartfelt, hand-written note from her partner’s grandmother.

“If you want to know the meaning of unconditional love, read this letter my girlfriend received from her grandma after she recently came out to her family about dating a woman,” Sowers tweeted. “Just be a good person and BE HAPPY”. That’s all we should ask of our children.”

Female athletes deserve to be paid what they’re worth, given the attention they’ve earned, and given space on and off the field to shine. @Onherturf is here to celebrate them, inspiring the next generation of badass women. Follow us here to join the movement.

Taylor Swift Just Revealed Her Mother Has A Brain Tumor

In an emotional new interview in Variety, Taylor Swift, 30, reveals that her mother Andrea, 62, has been recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. This news comes four years after Swift first shared that Andrea had been diagnosed with cancer. In that statement, posted to Swift’s Tumblr page, Swift wrote, “I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”

Now, Swift is sharing a little more about her mother’s journey. Her mother’s health will be included in the upcoming documentary Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, in a reportedly light-hearted scene featuring mama Swift’s “cancer dog”.

“Everyone loves their mom; everyone’s got an important mom,” Swift told Variety. “But for me, she’s really the guiding force. Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness.”

“While she was going through treatment [for her previously diagnosed cancer], they found a brain tumor,” she explained. “And the symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family.”

On Swift’s most recent album, Lover, there’s an entire song dedicated to Andrea titled “Soon You’ll Get Better,” that lets us into the singer’s private family life more than ever before.

“We as a family decided to put this on the album,” Swift said during a live stream in August 2019. “It’s something I’m so proud of. I can’t sing it, it’s hard, emotionally, to deal with that song.”

The lyrics are intimate and revealing. “In doctor’s office lighting, I didn’t tell you I was scared,” sings Swift in the song. “That was the first time we were there / Holy orange bottles, each night I pray to you / Desperate people find faith, so now I pray to Jesus, too.”

The song’s chorus features the exact title, “Soon you’ll get better,” which is a message to her mom.

Normally, Swift says that she’d be on the road performing for almost nine months at a time to promote her new album. Due to her mother’s health, however, she decided to abbreviate her Lover tour to just five stadium dates in the U.S and a month-long stint in Europe this summer.

“I mean, we don’t know what is going to happen,” the singer revealed. “We don’t know what treatment we’re going to choose. It just was the decision to make at the time, for right now, for what’s going on.”

Charlize Theron Says Getting That Diamond Bracelet Out Of Her Hair Was A “Disaster”

Update: After sharing that she wore a $15,000 Tiffany & Co. bracelet to cover her grown-in roots, Charlize Theron followed up her SAG Awards appearance with another hilarious revelation: “Such an amazing night – thanks for having me SAG Awards!” the actress and nominee wrote on Instagram. “And yes, getting that bracelet out of my hair was a disaster.” Adir Abergel, who sewed the piece through her braided part with needle and silver thread, reposted her caption to his own Instagram Stories with a laughing emoji saying, “Sorry boo.”

This story was originally published January 19, 2020.

The next time you don’t have time to get to the salon to refresh your hair color, you could reach for a temporary root fix — or you could raid your jewelry box like Charlize Theron.

For the 2020 SAG Awards, the actress walked the red carpet with her hair pulled back into a sleek bun with a straight row of diamonds anchoring her strong center part. During her red carpet interview, Theron revealed that her glittery hair accessory was intentionally placed to cover up her grown-in roots. “I didn’t have time to do my roots,” she said. Instead, her longtime stylist, Adir Abergel, suggested redirecting people’s attention with a diamond Tiffany & Co. bracelet.

“First off, I saw her incredible Givenchy gown, and it reminded me of the 1920s, so my brain immediately wanted to give her short haircut a new twist,” Abergel told Refinery29. “We had no time to dye her roots, so I was like, Ok let’s put on a bracelet.

To secure her diamond jewels, Abergel phoned a friend who was skilled at teeny cornrows to create a single plait along Theron’s part. “Then I sewed the bracelet onto the actual braid to secure it in place,” he says. To finish the look, Abergel smoothed his client’s hair with Virtue Healing Oil (Adir is the creative director for the brand) and locked it in with the Dyson Supersonic diffuser. The final look is further proof that skipping a salon appointment or two isn’t the end of the world once you have a Tiffany’s bracelet (or a cute knockoff).

Where New York Girls Go To Get Their Skin In Shape

Finding a good facialist is kind of like finding a good partner: Most of us have to shop around a little before we settle on "the one." And, much like bad relationships, bad facials can leave us unhappy, dissatisfied, and maybe a little emotionally scarred from the experience.

For that reason, personal recommendation is easily the most desired way to book a facial: You want to make sure you’re in trusted, capable hands — you know, the kind that can extract without breaking the skin, that will leave you pleasantly pink (not beet red!) after a good peel, or give you the glow you want all year round.

Ahead, a few beauty-obsessed New Yorkers share who they trust with their flawless faces.

Sofie Pavitt Skincare Studio

To a non-New Yorker, the tiny, nondescript walkup at 179 Canal Street might seem foreboding, but downtown beauty obsessives (editors, influencers, models, and downtown artists among them) know what the average passerby doesn’t: that just a few floors up sits the no-frills, all-action facial studio where Sofie Pavitt is redefining what it means to treat yourself. Pavitt, who fell in love with skin care during frequent visits to Seoul in her past life as a handbag designer, hasn’t been at it long, but her cool, unpretentious approach and Instagram savvy have already made her one of the most sought-after facialists in the game. (She's also a licensed medical aesthetician who can be found at Center Aesthetic & Dermatology two days a week.) Come for the gentle extractions, hydrojelly mask that cools down stressed-out skin by a full six degrees, and guaranteed next-day glow; stay for Pavitt's warm, unfussy vibes and passion for no-bullshit education. Bonus points for playing mellow rap vs. New Age ocean sounds and not smelling like a Doterra spill.

Sofie Pavitt Skincare Studio, 179 Canal Street, Suite 5B, 646-287-3265.

When celebrities like Rihanna and Anne Hathaway need to get their skin in tip-top shape, they flock to this cult 5th Avenue spot founded by celebrity facialist Tracie Martyn and holistic nutritionist Marius Morariu. With a focus on microcurrent, natural ingredients, LED, and the gentlest, can-barely-feel-them extractions, it’s the kind of facial that leaves your skin looking better when you come out, rather than red or blotchy. After three monthly treatments, our beauty director Cat Quinn says her typically oily and acne-prone skin looked so much firmer, smoother, and glowier that her fiancé started going before the wedding, too.

With two locations in NYC — on the Upper East Side and Flatiron — not only is Silver Mirror convenient for most Manhattanites, but the sleek setup also caters to whatever kind of facial you're looking for. Some of the most-requested treatments include the signature facial (offered for 30 or 50 minutes, customized to your personal concerns), dermaplaning, LED light therapy, deep peels, and a rotating menu of seasonal services. Also good to note if you're traveling south of the tristate to Washington D.C., and looking for a facial: There's a new Silver Mirror outpost in Dupont Circle.

Kate Somerville

On the top floor of NYC's new Nordstrom flagship lives a sprawling beauty space where you can get a blowout, mani pedi, brow touch-up, or the most worth-it service of them all: a facial or medical-grade treatment at the city's first and only Kate Somerville Clinic. From the 50-minute signature facial to the microneedling options, every service is provided by trained aestheticians. No matter which you opt for first, your skin will be tightened and plumped in all the right places — plus, you'll leave with a step-by-step plan for how to maintain that glow with Kate Somerville skin-care products.

Nordstrom NYC: Kate Somerville Clinic, 235 W 57th St, New York, NY 10019; (212) 295-2220.

Inderma Studio

Founded by aesthetician Nichelle Temple in 2017, Inderma specializes in all the trendy treatments you're probably dying to try, including dermaplaning, high frequency, LED therapy, microcurrent therapy, and even gua sha, the facial massage technique that's all over Instagram. With six years of experience providing facials, Temple creates custom experiences for each client and offers extractions that won't make your eyes water. Tucked into a quaint, candle-lit studio that's cozy and comfortable, check out this spot if you're looking for an instantly lifted, glowing complexion.

Inderma Studio, 25 W 26th St, Suite 415; (929) 260-3158.

Rescue Spa

If you live in New York, Rescue Spa might've been the first place you ever experienced Biologique Recherche, the iconic French brand known for making science-heavy skin care kind of sexy (and making an exfoliating liquid that smells like years-old vinegar a must-have for every in-the-know beauty enthusiast). You'll walk out of this massive Union Square location with glowing skin that's better than any filter. And with a service menu several pages deep, every single option will leave you feeling like you just got a bespoke treatment... even when you didn't.

Rescue Spa, 29 East 19th Street; (866) 772-2766.

The Sisley-Paris Spa

A romantic space in The Carlyle hotel makes for a sensational experience. The main attraction? The Phyto-Aromatic facials, a series that uses some of the Parisian brand's top-rated products. Or opt for a massage, wax, or full body treatment (we recommend the Zen Harmony for ultimate relaxation).

The Sisley-Paris Spa, 35 East 76th Street (3rd Floor at The Carlyle); (212) 660-7560.

JECT

As the name suggests, the most popular treatments on the menu at this posh West Village spa are the injectables, namely Botox. The intimate space is quaint and minimalist by design, to create a light, cool, non-stuffy environment for quick and effective medical-grade skin treatments. Obviously, the syringe isn't for everyone, but if you’re looking to treat yourself to a damn-good chemical peel, hydrating facial, or microneedling with PRP, this is a great spot. Most regulars cocktail the signature Ject Infusion Facial with routine Botox, but some just opt for the former; either way, you'll walk out glowing.

JECT, 138 West 10th Street; (917) 573 6806.

Natura Bissē

If you go here, be sure to ask for the novel treatment-inside-a-bubble concept made for both face and body. Why? It's all about pure air. Jump inside this isolated space free of polluting particles, viral, bacterial, and allergen agents for the Natura Bissē Bubble Pure air Diamond Experience Facial. The goal is to treat your lungs and your skin to quality air and promote maximized efficacy of the tailored skin-care treatment with the brand's Diamond Extreme line (or whatever your skin needs). Think Bubble Boy, but a hell of a lot more glamorous.

If you're trying this out for the first time, here's a taste of what might go down: a hydrating cleanse, a customized treatment from your aesthetician, rejuvenating eye treatment, perfecting mask and exfoliating massage, and a color-adapt treatment (a CC cream to leave you protected and even).

Natura Bissē, Shibui Spa, 377 Greenwich Street (The Greenwich Hotel); (646) 203-0045.

Haven Spa

If you're looking for a variety of facials, look no further than Haven Spa in NoHo. This pretty spot boasts a long list of creative treatments for your face and body with a bevy of add-ons — including a vitamin C infusion mask that boosts skin's radiance.

But don't stop at your face. One of our editors went to Haven for their Peach Smoothie treatment — which is basically a facial for your vulva. Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it.

Haven Spa, 250 Mercer Street (at East 4th St); (212) 343-3515.

Sadick Dermatology

For celebrity makeup artist Beau Nelson, good skin is an integral part of the job. After all, it’s what his A-list clients (like Kristen Stewart and Nicole Richie) are inspecting while he’s getting up close and personal with them in the chair.

Nelson regularly visits Luzinete at Sadick Dermatology on the Upper East Side. “I get the deep-cleansing facial and the AHA treatment,” he says. “Luzinete is gentle and efficient, and the service leaves my skin clean and glowing for weeks,” which is crucial, considering he’s constantly hopping between coasts for work. “She also introduced me to [topical gel] Epiduo," he adds, "which I use once or twice a week to keep my skin totally clear.”

Sadick Dermatology, 911 Park Avenue (at East 80th Street); (212) 772-7242.

L’appartement Caudalie

Makeup artist Brigitte Reiss-Andersen works with some of the most legendary fashion photographers of our time. So it’s no surprise that all of the images she’s helped create have one common thread: perfect, luminous skin.

The artist herself has an immaculate complexion sans foundation, due in part to her diligent facial routine — but also thanks to where she gets her facials done. “I love Caudalie spa...in New York City,” she says. “I get a facial there called Vinosculpt, which involves a low-electric-current massage to give the face a visible lift. It really works!”

L’appartement Caudalie, 819 Madison Ave #4A; (212) 265-3182.

The Red Door Salon & Spa

Felicia Walker Benson is the editor-in-chief behind ThisThatBeauty, so therefore it's her job to be in-the-know about where exactly to go and what exactly to get done. “I’m currently defying all signs of aging with Red Door Spa’s Advanced Brightening Facial," she says. "Rachel, at their Garden City location, is my ‘glow-to’ girl. With just one session, my skin is visibly brighter and infinitely more radiant. Like, angels actually appear afterwards! It’s packed with loads of vitamins and antioxidants, so it’s awesome for targeting hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones.”

Red Door Spa, multiple locations.

Ildi Pekar Skin Care

Makeup legend Rose-Marie Swift, founder of cult brand RMS Beauty, is known for being very particular about what she puts on her face. (Hence why her line is filled with delicious ingredients like coconut and jojoba oils, rosemary extract, and beeswax.) So whoever's touching her face on a regular basis must be up to her high standards.

“I see Ildi Pekar for her Refine Facial and Creative Fitness Sessions for body,” Swift says. “She also has an organic skin-care line that she worked on for years that she uses during her procedures." And if you're into funky treatments you'd most likely hear about from a celeb's Instagram, this is the spot to go. See: Pekar's magnetic-cupping facial.

Ildi Pekar Skin Care, 20 East 49th Street; (212) 682-6080.

Joanna Vargas

Vargas may have a slew of clients across the country, like Hollywood mainstays Julianne Moore and Naomi Watts, but she's garnered a cult-like following from New York celebs like super-stylist Kate Young and fitness guru Taryn Toomey. “I go to see Joanna as often as I can," Young says. "I totally relax when I'm with her, and it makes an incredible difference in my skin. People really notice — it’s totally effective.”

“Joanna has a gift,” Toomey adds. “She non-invasively lifts and revives layers of your face you didn’t know you had lost.”

Her signature treatment, the Triple Crown Facial, rings in at $550 for an hour (with Vargas herself; $250 for another esthetician). It’s a microcurrent facial, segmented into three steps, that literally enhances the contours of your face, reducing puffiness and enhancing elasticity.

Joanna Vargas, 501 Fifth Avenue (at 42nd Street); (212) 949-2350.

Georgia Louise

British aesthetician Georgia Louise is an East Coast favorite among beauty insiders (Gucci Westman is a client) and actresses alike — and we understand why. Her signature Microcurrent Lift facial helps to do just that, and all of her treatments are geared toward naturally lifting cheekbones and brows, de-puffing and brightening the face, and softening fine lines through deep-tissue massage, microcurrent treatments, and more. And by "more" we mean her celeb-favorite penis facial, the treatment Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock credit for their youthful glow.

Georgia Louise, 114 East 71st Street (near Park Avenue), #1E; (212) 472-1400.

Heyday

If you're looking to take the hassle and expense out of choosing, booking, and committing to a two-hour monthly facial, Heyday is your godsend. The menu offers up three facial options (one 30-minutes, one 50, and the other 75), to help avoid the anxiety that comes with picking from a never-ending treatment list, one can only assume.

Heyday, 67 West 71st Street; (212) 796-7796.

SB Skin

Sally Hansen global color ambassador Madeline Poole is one of the coolest girls in the beauty biz. And considering she’s worked with just about every beauty editor, stylist, makeup artist, and hair guru in New York City, it comes as no surprise that her facialist is the kind of cult favorite you only hear about through word of mouth. “I go to Shamara Bondaroff,” Poole says. “Everything is as natural as it can be, her creams smell amazing, and she uses rosewater and homemade tinctures. Her facials are so relaxing, I can fall asleep.”

In Bondaroff’s bed, Poole gets microcurrent facials, “a non-invasive rejuvenation of the muscles in the face. I’m not sure if I’m unlucky or if it’s because I squint all day looking at tiny fingernails, but I’ve developed some premature wrinkles. This is the best and most holistic way to soften the tension.”

SB Skin, 37 West 19th Street, #3; (917) 243-1389.

Bliss Spa

If we had to guess, we'd say it was the Triple Oxygen Facial that cemented Bliss as a skin hot spot. The treatment involves a targeted peel, an energizing enzyme pack, three different forms of oxygen, and an oxygen spray to awaken your complexion and leave your skin brighter than when you walked in. Refreshing? To say the very least.

Bliss Spa, 568 Broadway #2; (877) 862-5477.

Daphne

If you feel like your skin is at the point of no return, go straight to Daphne. It's a cozy space that feels like it was plucked from a Parisian street and offers heavy-hitting, transformative treatments like microcurrent and micro-needling, plus superb (but gentle) extractions.

With waxing, sugaring, and microblading services also on the menu, this location is truly a one-stop shop. It even exclusively carries products from Biologique Recherche.

Daphne, 375 Broome Street; (347) 382-8807.

PFRANKMD Skin Salon

If you ever pay a visit to this uptown spa, go for the MDNA Skin Signature Facial with leading aesthetician Edyta Jarosz. Or stay for the entire menu of top-notch facials and other services, like chemical peels and a comprehensive purifying facial featuring extractions and oxygen LED lights.

PFRANKMD Skin Salon, 1049 5th Ave., Suite 2B; (212) 226-3480.

La Prairie Spa

If you're looking for a crazy-luxe spa experience, check out the La Prairie Spa inside New York's storied Ritz Carlton Hotel. The spa itself is small, but the services are top-notch.

The treatments are variations on the traditional facial use products from La Prairie, of course. Head on over if you're looking for an excellent extraction session that'll leave your pores free of debris and without any residual marks. Check out one of the spa's most expensive treatments in this video.

La Prairie Spa at the Ritz Carlton New York, 50 Central Park South, (212) 308-9100.appearance by Mi-Anne Chan.

NYDG Integral Health & Wellness

The New York Dermatology Group (led by Dr. David Colbert) offers city dwellers the full experience of a Susanne Kaufmann facial without having to book a flight to Bregenzerwald, Austria. Although the upscale wellness space offers other health therapies, like IVs and cryotherapy, it's the menu's Kaufmann offerings that have us hooked. Perhaps it's because the products are so good (each collection includes a specific recipe of botanical ingredients fit for certain skin concerns) or that the treatments are the sort of rejuvenating refresh our faces need when the season change, but either way, it's worth the splurge (and we mean splurge — the Transformative Facial is $475).

NYDG Integral Health & Wellness, 119 5th Avenue, 2nd Floor, (212) 352-3333.

The Spa At Life Time Athletic New York

Inside the swanky Life Time Athletic gym is an equally swanky spa where you can get a facial after yoga (or just because). The upscale location features a variety of services, but if you're going to get a treatment done, try the HydraFacial, which uses a unique cleansing tool to remove dead skin and exfoliate all while pumping antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and serums back into your face.

The Spa at Life Time Athletic New York, 605 West 42nd Street, (212) 564-1300.

This Is How Much The Vanderpump Rules Cast Is Worth

$

0
Vanderpump Rules season eight kicked off with a bang last week, and we found our favorite first family of West Hollywood happily nested in Valley Village. There was also a crying Scheana, Tom Schwartz in a t-shirt dress, and some fresh meat named Max Boyens. And if the season trailer is any indication, there's a lot more excitement to come.

The highlights: many alcohol-fueled spats, a booze cruise, the wedding of Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright, and Tom Sandoval getting arrested. And that's just a minute-long clip. What other storms will hit Bravo's first family this season?

What we do know is that, since the show's inaugural season in 2013, the SURvers' stars have been on the rise — and so too have their bank accounts. So who is the richest? Ahead, we break down how much money each Vanderpump Rules star is worth.

Lisa Vanderpump

It should come as no surprise that the VPR matriarch reigns supreme when it comes to money in the bank. In addition to co-producing and starring in Vanderpump Rules, LVP served as one of the mainstays of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for nearly a decade (and is reportedly the richest of that lot, too). She and her husband, Ken Todd, own several bars and restaurants including SUR, Villa Blanca, Pump, Vanderpump Cocktail Garden, and Tom Tom. She also owns Vanderpump Dogs, a dog rescue organization, Vanderpump Pets, a pet accessories company, and a rosé line. In essence, what can't she do?

She reportedly earns half a million dollars for every season of Vanderpump Rules, and her total net worth is estimated at $75 million.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Jax Taylor

This bachelor-no-more reportedly earns $25,000 per episode of Vanderpump Rules for being The Bad Boy at the center of the SUR orbit's drama. And he is now adding premade drink mix entrepreneur to his résumé, with Just Add X coming in 2019.

He has an estimated net worth of $400,000, most of which comes from his Bravo paycheck, with help from his paid appearances and sponsored social media posts. In 2016, he told Complex, "If I’m smart about it, and if I live reasonably, I’ll be good for the rest of my life."

But last May, according to E!, Taylor was hit with a $80,424 tax lien, right around the time he announced that he and Cartwright purchased a home together.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Stassi Schroeder

Things are pretty peachy for Stassi these days.

In addition to serving as a cast member on VPR since its early days, Shroeder is the host of podcast Straight Up With Stassi, and has appeared in Summer House, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Amazing Race, and Hollywood Medium. Ever the renaissance woman, she also created a national holiday and has a rosé line with Kristen Doute and Katie Maloney-Schwartz called Witches of Weho. And she has a sweet (and normal!) dude named Beau Clark.

She also is the New York Times-bestselling author of Next Level Basic — a book about embracing your basicness.

According to Riot Housewives, Shroeder rakes in about $15,000 per episode of VPR. All in all, her net worth is estimated at $300,000.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Lala Kent

Despite her relative newbie status — Kent didn't become a full cast member until season 6 — she is quickly catching up to her costars when it comes to net worth. In addition to starring on VPR, she has hit the big screen in such films as The Row and the upcoming Axis Sally with Al Pacino. She also has her own beauty brand, the aptly-named Give Them Lala Beauty, and a burgeoning music career. She recently teamed up with Vanderpump costar Scheana Shay for a new song and music video.

She is engaged to producer Randall Emmett, who is thought to have a net worth of $16 million. Kent, herself, is reportedly worth $2 million.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Scheana Marie

Before Vanderpump Rules, Scheana Marie made her Bravo debut on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, when it was revealed that the SUR server had an affair with Housewife Brandi Glanville's ex-husband Eddie Cibrian during their marriage.

Now a full-fledged Bravo star in her own right, Scheana Marie made $63,000 for season 3 of VPR according to Betches, and is making even more now. She also made out with a nice chunk a change following her divorce from Mike Shay in 2017 — the likes of $50,000. Her reality TV stints, plus a few acting gigs (did anyone see Femme Fatales?), a Vegas show called "Sex Tips," and a pop single called "What I Like," have all contributed to her wealth, which reportedly adds up to a total of $150,000.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Brittany Cartwight

Once Cartwright and Jax Taylor met in Vegas in 2015 and he convinced her to move to L.A., the rest was history, and she soon became a crucial member of the SUR orbit. In addition to being a cast member on VPR, she and her now-husband had a spin-off show, Vanderpump Rules: Jax And Brittany Take Kentucky. Cartwright is valued at $50,000.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Tom Schwartz

Apparently, Tom Schwartz's net worth rings in at $2 million. He wasn't an original cast member and never worked at SUR, which might be why. (Well actually, he did a shift...sort of...) But he is one half of Tom Tom, his biggest claim to fame to date.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Katie-Maloney Schwartz

Her net worth ranks in at $30,000. She launched a lipstick line called Pucker & Pout, with hopes of expanding it into an extensive beauty line. Buh-bye, Tequila Katie! She and Tom bought a house in Valley Village last year for $1.9 million. Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

Tom Sandoval

The other Tom in Tom Tom, Sandoval is worth $2 million. This comes largely from his VPR paycheck — he reportedly makes $15,000 per episode — as well as his newfound career as a restauranteur. He and Ariana Madix bought a house in Valley Village last year for over $2 million. Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo

James Kennedy

Where SUR's resident DJ goes, drama follows. In addition to stirring the pot on VPR, Kennedy's biggest claim to fame is being godson to George Michael, who may or may not have left him an inheritance. Apart from this, his net worth is a bit of a mystery.Photo: Tommy Garcia/Bravo.

Dayna Kathan

The state of the newest SURver's finances are unknown, but if she's anything like her cast mates, she'll go on to make a pretty penny. Apart from her gig at SUR, Kathan is a stand-up comedian. She also appeared on Vanderpump Rules in season 7, when the girls went to Solvang, CA, for a wine tasting trip.

What Sex Education Gets Right About Vaginismus

$
0
0

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Sex Education season 2 finale, “Chapter 8.”

Sex Education’s Season 2 finale opens on a sex scene. After Lily (Tanya Reynolds) admitted that she doesn’t want to be “just friends” with Ola (Patricia Allison) at the end of Episode 7, Episode 8 opens with the new couple in bed together. But while Ola is in a striped top and jeans, Lily is decked out in a sexy alien costume (reminiscent of the costumes in the school’s outer-space Romeo & Juliet musical), complete with tentacles attached to her fingertips.

All is going well until Ola slides a hand under Lily’s silver miniskirt. “Ow!” Lily yelps, and explains to Ola, “It’s not you, it’s me. I have something called vaginismus. My vagina’s like a Venus flytrap.”

Lily gives Ola a quick explanation of her condition, showing her a kit of five different-sized dilators that she’s supposed to insert into her vagina — though so far, she can only use the smallest one. “I think it’s because I put too much pressure on myself,” Lily says. After Ola asks, Lily explains that she does masturbate. “I just keep to the outside,” she says, which gives Ola an idea: mutual masturbation. Cut to the couple gasping in bed together as they both come.

Fans of the show are calling its portrayal of vaginismus groundbreaking — especially because it shows that the condition doesn’t have to mean the end of sexual pleasure

Vaginismus “is a spasm or contraction of the muscles around the vagina,” the nonprofit medical center the Cleveland Clinic explains. While it can happen during sexual activity, it can also happen while inserting a tampon or during a Pap smear

While the condition — including how common it is — isn’t well understood, the Cleveland Clinic notes that it’s “thought to be a psychological condition, although some physical conditions can contribute to it.” The list of potential causes includes anxiety, fear of sex, past sexual trauma, and negative emotions towards sex, as well as physical conditions including yeast infections, UTIs, vulvar vestibulitis (an inflammatory condition) and atrophic vaginitis (a painful condition caused by lack of estrogen after menopause).

Vaginismus is treated both physically and psychologically, with counseling, Kegel exercises, pelvic floor physical therapy, and vaginal dilators. More rarely, Botox treatments are used to ease the painful spasms.

Dilators like the ones Lily uses aren’t meant to “stretch” the vagina, the Cleveland Clinic says. Instead, they help patients get familiar with the sensation: “The goal [is]… to give a woman the comfort of being able to place these safe devices both outside and inside her vagina, in the privacy of her own home.”

In 2014, Chloe Schildhause wrote a personal essay for Refinery29 about her experience with vaginismus. “While I didn’t go the Botox route myself, I did invest some time in meeting with a physical therapist who guided me through breathing techniques while I inserted dilators,” she wrote. “I then took this practice home with me; a few weeks later, I found that I was able to wear tampons for the first time. About four months later, I was able to undergo a vaginal exam. And, the following year, I was able to have sex without pain.”

And though it’s not true for everyone, some people with vaginismus also maintain great sex lives by following Lily’s technique: focusing on the clitoris rather than penetrating the vagina.  As sex blogger Sasha Kazantseva, who is a lesbian, previously wrote for Refinery29 UK, “[I’ve had] vaginismus for the majority of my life, and I had no problems with it; I just practiced non-penetrative sex and explained it to my partners.”

Near the end of the episode, we see Lily in her bedroom by herself. After considering the smallest dilator, she instead picks up the second-smallest. To her surprise, this time, she’s able to insert it. As for what this means for her and Ola’s sex life? We’ll have to wait until Season 3 to find out.

Tulsi Gabbard Is Suing Hillary Clinton For $50 Million — Yes, Really

With days to go until the Iowa caucus and the four frontrunners of the Democratic primary polling within an implausibly close range, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has reinserted herself into the fracas by deploying the time-honored political strategy of “just suing Hillary Clinton for defamation and seeing what happens.”

On Wednesday, Gabbard  — who is still running for president, despite polling at around 1% — filed suit against the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State on the grounds that Clinton falsely characterized her as a “Russian asset” during an October 2019 podcast appearance

In a statement given to The Hill, Gabbard’s lawyer, Brian Dunne, said that while his client’s political campaign “continues to gain momentum… [Tulsi] has seen her political and personal reputation smeared and her candidacy intentionally damaged by Clinton’s malicious and demonstrably false remarks.”

During her appearance on an episode of Campaign HQ With David Plouffe, Clinton claimed that the Russians were “grooming” a third-party candidate, suggesting that they had “their eye on somebody who’s currently in the Democratic primary,” who she insinuated was Gabbard

“She’s the favorite of the Russians, they have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far, and that’s assuming Jill Stein will give it up, which she might not, because she’s also a Russian asset,” Clinton added. “Yeah, she’s a Russian asset, I mean totally. They know they can’t win without a third-party candidate.”

In the lawsuit, lawyers for Gabbard claim that Clinton is a “cutthroat politician” who “sought retribution” for Gabbard endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016, when he was Clinton’s primary opponent.

“Clinton’s false assertions were made in a deliberate attempt to derail Tulsi’s presidential campaign,” the lawsuit says. “Tulsi brings this lawsuit to ensure that the truth prevails and to ensure this country’s political elites are held accountable for intentionally trying to distort the truth in the midst of a critical Presidential election.”

The lawsuit comes on the heels of an explosive interview Clinton gave to The Hollywood Reporter in which she announced a four-part Hulu docuseries called Hillary. The series will focus on the 2016 presidential campaign, but Clinton doubled down on the assertion she makes in the film that “nobody likes” Vermont senator and 2020 presidential frontrunner Bernie Sanders.

While Gabbard seems determined to throw the book at Clinton for her perceived sleights, Sanders brushed off Clinton’s comments about him on Tuesday with little fanfare, simply offering, “On a good day, my wife likes me.”

“Stone Blonde” Hair Color Is Platinum’s Cooler Baby Sister

Maintaining platinum hair color comes with a warning label. There's inevitable breakage, rules around chlorine and salt water exposure, pricey purple shampoos and deep conditioners, and a lengthy appointment required every three weeks. Still, for an edgy, confidence-boosting icy lob, many of us accept the side effects with pleasure. But now, there's a way to get that same brightness without committing to traditional double-process platinum — just ask for "stone-blonde" highlights.

According to Los Angeles-based colorist Sarah Klein, this take on platinum is all about soft, tonal dimension, but since it's as bright as platinum, it offers a similar feeling with less commitment. “Stone blonde strikes the balance between ashy and warm, creating a natural, beige-blonde finish," she explains. "It's actually more versatile than platinum, because it's not a single color, but factors in your natural root color and skin complexion."

If you're as intrigued as us, scroll though the slideshow ahead for your visual guide to platinum's trendy baby sister.
Notice how this shade of blonde is very pale, but maintains soft, warm undertones that keep it from being bleached white.
Create a more lived-in — and totally edgy — look by leaving a naturally-dark root intact.
Colorist Kari Hill artfully placed these bright highlights to ensure that the look grows out with ease.
If you're looking for the most low-maintenance color, consider asking for a balayage technique. Ask your colorist to place the palest, platinum-adjacent pieces just on your ends and around your face.
In order to maintain stone-blonde color between appointments, Klein recommends using a combo of color-boosting shampoo and conditioner, her favorite is Light Beige by Evo.
Think about a beach stone, with marbled veins of light brown and soft red. Stone-colored hair should have that same subtle dimension.

Chocolate Is Good For PMS, But These Foods Are Better

When I’m on my period, all I want to do is curl up with a heating pad and eat an entire bag of Goldfish. But as satisfying as that might sound, it’s not the best thing I can do for my raging symptoms — at least from a nutritional standpoint, says Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, RD, author of The Better Period Food Solution.

“The food you choose to eat has a direct impact on the health of your period,” she says. According to her, certain dietary choices can heal your body, while others can stress it.

Many period-related symptoms like cramping, anxiety, moodiness, breast pain, and acne are caused by hormonal fluctuations, Beckerman says. What you eat can make those swings better — or worse.

“I always recommend avoiding caffeine, alcohol, high sodium foods, refined sugars, and low fiber foods to women who experience uncomfortable period symptoms,” explains Hillary Cecere, RD, nutritionist at Eat Clean Bro. So my salty Goldfish might taste like relief in the moment, but they may be working against me in the long term.

Okay, so I shouldn’t dine out exclusively on crackers and chocolate during this time. But what are the best foods to eat? I asked the experts for their suggestions, so I can spend a little less time under the heating pad this month.

Oats

Oats are rich in heart-healthy fiber, whole grains, and vitamin B1, known as thiamin, Beckerman says. “That’s a water soluble vitamin that can essentially bring you back to life when PMS is in town,” she says. “That’s because thiamin-rich foods break down carbohydrates in the body, so more mood-boosting neurotransmitters become available in the brain. This process can help combat PMS-related moodiness and anxiety.”

Sure enough, women with a higher dietary intake of thiamin had a lower risk of developing PMS, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

To integrate more of these nutrients into your diet, make overnight oats or lighten your coffee with oat milk.

Watermelon

Staying hydrated can help you control bloating and prevent constipation, Cecere says. But guzzling plain H2O isn’t the only way to up your water intake. Juicy foods like watermelon contain plenty — plus, a dose of other good-for-you nutrients like vitamin B6, which studies show can ease the irritability, bloating, and anxiety associated with PMS, Beckerman says.

Throw some watermelon into a warm grain salad, or eat it picnic-style, plain and sliced, she suggests.

Flaxseeds:

You’ve heard about omega-3s, but omega-6s are a thing too. The latter, which are found foods such as cashews and sunflower seeds, are believed to be inflammatory, and may contribute to cramps, Beckerman says. But omega-3 fatty acids may counteract that inflammation to reduce pain.

A good source of omega-3s: flaxseeds. Grind them up and sprinkle them over your morning parfait, or mix a few tablespoons into a smoothie, she suggests.

Mushrooms

Many mushrooms are rich in vitamin D, which plays a critical role in reproductive health and mood regulation. “When estrogen drops right before your period, it also takes down vitamin D, which can send your energy and mood south,” Beckerman says. “That’s why the couch looks more desirable leading up to your period than ever.”

Saute some mushrooms in an omelette or chop them up and mix them into a pasta sauce to get an extra shot of this nutrient. Other good sources include fish, cheese, and egg yolks, or supplements.

Salmon

“We know this fish is a top source of inflammation-fighting omega 3s, and it’s also high in calcium,” Beckerman says. “Low amounts of calcium in the diet is thought to contribute to PMS, so eating three servings of salmon the week [leading up to] your period may be the ticket to easing period symptoms.”

Nuts, seeds, and beans

These are all good sources of magnesium, which Cecere says can help prevent irritability. Beckerman adds that the nutrient may also help relax muscle contractions coming from the uterus during PMS.

Kate Middleton Felt Isolated After She Had Prince George — Like Many New Moms

Royals — they’re just like us! They wrestle with tough family problems. They experiment with highlights. And they’re vulnerable to the stress of parenthood. In fact, Kate Middleton opened up about her own new-mom struggles during a visit to Ely and Careau Children’s Centre in Cardiff, Wales this Wednesday.

“It’s nice to be back in Wales,” Middleton said, according to People Magazine. Both the duchess and her husband, Prince William, had previously lived in Wales when he was stationed there during his time in the Royal Air Force. His position required extended time away from home and night shifts. Not ideal when you have a newborn.

“It was the first year and I’d just had George — William was still working with search and rescue — and we came up here and I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey. It was so isolated, so cut off,” Middleton said. “I didn’t have any family around, and he was doing night shifts. So… if only I had had a center like this.”

The Ely and Careau Children’s Centre offers care, education, health, wellbeing, and development services for children and their parents, their website says. Places like these can be a crucial asset to people who need support while raising kids.

In a recent survey of new parents conducted by Refinery29, we heard a similar message to Middleton’s. “If I had known how isolating those first few months at home with a newborn would be, I would have planned for it,” Sandy, 43, said. “I would have reached out to other soon-to-be moms beforehand, so that I had those connections. I know you can join mommy groups after you have the baby, but I just felt so tired and not myself — not exactly in the best headspace to meet new people.”

Middleton was at the center to promote an early child development survey called “5 big questions under 5.” The hope is that the results will help shed light on the experiences of both children and parents in this stage of life — something that could be a helpful resource for new parents in the future.

Last week, in an emotional video titled “I’m Coming Out” that has since garnered over 32 million views, beauty vlogger Nikkie de Jager — better known on YouTube as NikkieTutorials — revealed publicly for the first time that she is transgender. On today’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Dutch makeup artist conducted her first interview since the announcement, sitting down with Ellen to discuss her journey as well as the reported blackmailing that forced her to come forward with her story earlier than planned.

“A couple of weeks ago, I got emails from a certain person, and he was not okay with the fact that I was ‘lying’ and wanted to expose that,” de Jager revealed of the unnamed person who she said threatened to out her to the press. “He had a very pressuring tone of voice, and he was like, ‘If we don’t get an answer by tomorrow, it’s out.’ I feel like his entire goal was to destroy my life. But, plot twist, that didn’t happen.”

When DeGeneres asked the YouTuber if she would’ve ever revealed that she was transgender had she not been blackmailed, de Jager opened up about her thought process. She recalled crying as she uploaded the video, and her fiancé, Dylan, encouraging her every step of the way. “I always wanted to come out with it, but it is such a thing that it’s like, how do you find the timing? There’s never the perfect timing,” she said. But, she added, “Now I get to be free.”

The content creator also took the opportunity to acknowledge her privilege as a white, blonde, cis-passing woman who started her transition at a young age, and whose parents offered her love and support throughout the process. It’s with this new understanding — that not everyone is so fortunate — that she hopes to inspire others. “I want to take this opportunity to hopefully inspire a lot of transgender people out there, even when you’re starting later on in your journey, that we need to accept that,” she says.

Before the interview was over, DeGeneres — with the help of Shutterfly — surprised the YouTuber with a $10,000 donation made in her name to The Trevor Project, a national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth.

As de Jager looks towards the future, she says she’s ultimately grateful for the support she has received, and the timing of when she was able to speak her truth. As she said to DeGeneres, “I was so happy that it’s 2020, and the acceptance is real.”

Meghan & Harry Wearing Beanies Outside Marks The Dawn Of A New Era

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren’t at Windsor Castle anymore, a fact proven by their recent choice of headgear

Just days after the couple resigned from their royal duties in favor of a more low-key lifestyle in Vancouver, Canada, both Harry and Meghan were spotted participating in “normal” activities: Markle went for a hike in the woods with Archie and their two four-legged friends, Oz and Guy. Harry flew commercial… and carried his own bag off the plane (shocking, I know). But if the duo’s new lifestyle isn’t sign enough that a new era has begun, their casual beanies totally are.

Before we examine Meghan and Harry’s respective winter accessories, though, it’s important to first take a look back at their beginnings. It was October of 2016; Prince Harry was giving his new girlfriend, then-Suits actress Meghan Markle, a tour of his hometown. Highly publicized paparazzi photos of the date documented the couple sporting a now-familiar set of matching beanies.

Of course, when you’re attending charity galas and polo matches on any given Tuesday, you can’t exactly show up wearing a regular old beanie. But now that Meghan and Harry have started fresh as non-royals, meaning that they can do whatever they want and wear whatever they want, it seems that they’ve returned to their old sartorial ways: wearing beanies, that is.

Markle’s cap of choice was a hunter green slouchy style courtesy of Madewell, which she paired with a long-sleeved black workout top, leggings, and lace-up hiking boots. Harry recycled a navy blue beanie that he’s been spotted in before, wearing it this time with a black puffer coat and jeans during his trans-Atlantic flight from the UK to Vancouver.

And since winter’s only just begun, we’re predicting a long season of beanie action from the once-royal couple. Join them in celebrating their newfound fashion freedom by shopping the four Meghan Markle-approved beanies below.
